How much protein you actually need per day

A balanced plate with protein sources

Why the official number misleads

The 0.8 g per kilo RDA was set as the minimum to prevent deficiency in sedentary adults. It is a safety floor, not a performance target. Anyone training regularly operates well above it.

The range the research supports

For people lifting and trying to gain or preserve lean mass, most studies converge between 1.6 and 2.2 g per kilo of body weight per day. Past 2.2 g the extra benefit is small enough that it rarely justifies the effort.

How to spread it across the day

Splitting the total across three to five meals, each with 25 to 40 g, covers the muscle protein synthesis stimulus without obsessive tracking. The daily total matters more than exact timing.
